Port & berth operations · Marine & maritime

Hold the berth window, avoid preventable demurrage.

An ETA slips six hours and the whole berth line-up shifts — pilots, tugs, and stevedores all re-sequenced. Miss one notification and laytime burns into demurrage.

The reality

Demurrage is a coordination problem.

When a vessel's ETA moves, the berth slot, pilot booking, tug order, and stevedore gang all have to be adjusted in lockstep, and the shore-side port call file — pre-arrival notification to the port authority, berth booking confirmation, crew list, and cargo manifest for customs and immigration — has to be filed ahead of arrival. A single missed notification leaves a gang standing idle or a vessel at anchor, and laytime keeps running.

The operator owns the port-ops desk end to end. It watches ETAs, adjusts the berth slot, re-notifies the pilot, tugs, and stevedore, files the pre-arrival paperwork, and relays the master's Notice of Readiness so the vessel works on arrival and laytime is protected.

The outcome

35% of port-ops desk work taken off the team

On-time berth, no preventable demurrage.

  • Berth line-ups are re-sequenced the moment an ETA moves
  • Pilot, tugs, and stevedore are always working the same arrival time
  • Pre-arrival paperwork is filed and the master's NOR is relayed on time, so laytime is protected
